Thürmer Tools ApS in Denmark holds one of Northern Europe's largest inventories of HSS thread cutting tools (18,000+ items) and produces taps, dies and thread gauges in non-standard and special sizes to order. This page answers the questions we hear most often from engineers, buyers and workshops looking for a thread size that is not in the catalogue.
A special size tap or die is any thread cutting tool whose combination of diameter, pitch, thread form, tolerance class, hand (left/right) or geometry falls outside the standard DIN/ISO catalogue ranges. Typical examples are metric fine pitches like M27x1 or M40x2, large inch sizes such as 1.1/8-8 UN, left-hand pipe threads like G 1/2 LH, or an extra-long shank for a deep bore. Thürmer Tools produces these to drawing or designation, usually within 2–8 weeks.
The stock programme covers metric coarse and fine threads from M1 to M64 and above, UNC and UNF, BSW and BSF, BSP (G) and BSPT (R/Rc), NPT and NPSM, trapezoidal (Tr), Pg conduit and BA threads – more than 18,000 items in HSS and HSS-E. Many sizes that other suppliers treat as specials, for example M33x2, M45x1.5 or 1.1/4-12 UNF, are on the shelf in Denmark and ship the same day when ordered before 14:30.
Yes. Taps and dies can be manufactured in practically any diameter/pitch combination, in 60° metric or unified form, 55° Whitworth form, 30° trapezoidal form or a customer-specific profile. Send the thread designation or a drawing; we confirm feasibility, price and lead time, typically 2–8 weeks for a made-to-order tap.
Check the designation against the standard series: ISO 261/DIN 13 for metric coarse and fine, ASME B1.1 for UNC/UNF, ISO 228 for G threads, ASME B1.20.1 for NPT, DIN 103 for trapezoidal. If your diameter and pitch appear in those tables it is a standard thread and is probably in stock. If the pitch is unusual for the diameter (e.g. M30x1, M18x0.75), or the thread is left-hand, oversized, undersized or has a special tolerance, it is a special. When in doubt, send the designation – we identify it for you.
The thread designation (diameter, pitch or TPI, standard), tolerance class (e.g. 6H, 6G, 2B, 3B), right- or left-hand, the material to be threaded, blind or through hole, quantity, and any dimensional requirements such as overall length, shank diameter or square. A drawing or a sample of the mating part is welcome but not required.
Metric coarse (ISO 261 / DIN 13-1) is the default pitch for each diameter, e.g. M10x1.5, M12x1.75, M16x2, M20x2.5. Metric fine has a smaller pitch for the same diameter, e.g. M10x1, M12x1.25, M16x1.5, M20x1.5. Fine threads give higher tensile area, finer adjustment and better resistance to loosening under vibration, and are common in automotive, hydraulics and instrumentation. Taps for both are stocked; unusual fine pitches are made to order.
M12x1.25 is an ISO metric fine thread with a nominal outside diameter of 12 mm and a pitch of 1.25 mm (the distance between adjacent thread crests). The coarse equivalent M12 has a pitch of 1.75 mm. M12x1.25 is used for example on wheel studs, spark plugs and hydraulic fittings. Tap drill for M12x1.25 is 10.8 mm.
UNC (Unified National Coarse) and UNF (Unified National Fine) are the inch-based 60° thread series defined in ASME B1.1, used throughout North America and in aerospace, defence and older machinery. Sizes are given as diameter and threads per inch (TPI), e.g. 1/2-13 UNC or 1/2-20 UNF. Thürmer stocks UNC/UNF taps and dies from No.4 to 2 inch; UNEF (extra fine) and 8-UN, 12-UN and 16-UN constant-pitch series are available as specials.
They are all 55° Whitworth-form pipe threads. BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel, ISO 228) is designated G, e.g. G 1/2, and seals with a washer or O-ring. BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper, ISO 7/EN 10226) is designated R for the external and Rc for the internal thread, e.g. Rc 3/4, and seals on the thread itself with a 1:16 taper. 'BSP' alone usually means the parallel G thread. The pitch is identical for G and R of the same size, so a G 1/2 nut does not seal on an R 1/2 taper thread even though it screws on.
NPT (National Pipe Taper, ASME B1.20.1) is the American tapered pipe thread with a 60° flank angle and a 1:16 taper. BSPT has a 55° flank angle and the same 1:16 taper, but different TPI in most sizes: 1/8 NPT is 27 TPI vs Rc 1/8 at 28 TPI, 1/4 NPT 18 vs Rc 1/4 19, and 1 NPT 11.5 vs Rc 1 11 TPI (only the 1/2 and 3/4 sizes share 14 TPI). NPT and BSPT are not interchangeable. NPTF is the dry-seal variant with modified crest and root. Thürmer stocks NPT taps and dies from 1/16 to 2 inch; NPTF and NPSM specials are made to order.
A trapezoidal thread (DIN 103 / ISO 2904) has a 30° flank angle and a flat crest and root, designated Tr followed by diameter x pitch, e.g. Tr 20x4 or Tr 40x7. It is the standard motion thread for lead screws, spindles, jacks and valve stems because it carries axial load in both directions. Thürmer keeps common Tr taps in stock and makes multi-start, left-hand and non-standard pitch versions (e.g. Tr 30x3, Tr 24x5 LH) to order.
Pg (Panzergewinde, DIN 40430) is a German conduit thread with an 80° flank angle used on cable glands, electrical enclosures and older lighting fixtures. Sizes run Pg 7, Pg 9, Pg 11, Pg 13.5, Pg 16, Pg 21, Pg 29, Pg 36, Pg 42 and Pg 48. Although metric M cable-gland threads have largely replaced Pg in new equipment, repair and retrofit work still needs Pg taps and dies, which Thürmer stocks.
BA (British Association) is a small 47.5° metric-based thread series used in instruments, electrical equipment, model engineering and vintage British machinery. Sizes are numbered from 0 BA (6 mm) down to 16 BA, with even numbers most common: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 BA. Thürmer stocks BA taps and dies for repair and restoration work.
BSW (British Standard Whitworth) is the coarse series and BSF (British Standard Fine) the fine series of the 55° Whitworth thread, both in inch sizes and TPI. 1/2 BSW is 12 TPI, 1/2 BSF is 16 TPI. Note that BSW and UNC share TPI in most sizes but differ in flank angle (55° vs 60°), so they are not interchangeable where strength matters. Both are stocked for maintenance of British machinery, classic vehicles and marine equipment.
The constant-pitch UN series keep the same threads per inch across many diameters: 8 UN (8 TPI), 12 UN (12 TPI), 16 UN (16 TPI). They are used on large flanges, pressure vessels, wind turbine and oil and gas equipment, e.g. 1.1/8-8 UN, 1.3/4-8 UN, 2.1/2-8 UN. These are outside most catalogues but are a routine special for Thürmer, produced in HSS-E, typically within 2–8 weeks.
MJ (ISO 5855) and UNJ (ASME B1.15) are aerospace variants of metric and unified threads with a larger, controlled root radius on the external thread to improve fatigue life. Internal MJ/UNJ threads have a larger minor diameter than standard M/UN threads, so they need a dedicated tap. Thürmer produces MJ and UNJ taps to order for aerospace and defence customers.
A left-hand (LH) thread tightens counter-clockwise and is used where rotation would loosen a right-hand thread: turnbuckles, bicycle pedals, some gas fittings, cutter arbors and lead screws. Designation adds LH, e.g. M16x1.5 LH or 1/2-20 UNF LH. Thürmer stocks left-hand taps and dies in common metric and inch sizes and produces any other LH size to order.
M27x1 is an extra-fine metric thread outside the common ISO fine series (M27x2 and M27x1.5). It is typically used on sensor bodies, optical mounts and hydraulic adapters. It is a made-to-order special at Thürmer Tools in HSS-E, delivered in 2–8 weeks. Tap drill diameter is 26.0 mm.
Yes. M30x1.5 is a standard ISO fine thread and is in stock as machine tap, hand tap set and die. It is common on hydraulic cylinders, spindle noses and gland nuts. Tap drill is 28.5 mm.
M40x2 and M40x1.5 are ISO fine threads used on spindle nuts, bearing lock nuts and hydraulic fittings. Both are normally available from stock in HSS-E; M40x3 and M40x1 are produced to order. Tap drills: M40x1.5 → 38.5 mm, M40x2 → 38.0 mm.
Yes. Large metric taps M52, M56, M60 and M64 in coarse (5, 5.5 and 6 mm pitch) and fine (2, 3 and 4 mm pitch) are part of the stock programme; sizes above M64 up to M100 and beyond are produced to order. For very large threads we can also supply thread milling cutters or thread chasers as an alternative to a solid tap.
Yes, on request. Solid HSS taps are produced up to roughly M100 / 4 inch; above that, thread milling or a sectional tap is usually more economical. Send the size and quantity and we will propose the most cost-effective tool.
1.1/8-8 UN (8-pitch series) is used on flange bolting in wind, offshore and pressure equipment. It is a regular special for Thürmer, produced in HSS-E, typically within 2–8 weeks. Tap drill is 25.4 mm (1 inch).

G 1/2 LH (BSPP left-hand) is used on some gas fittings, propane regulators and coolant lines. It is available from Thürmer as a special in HSS-E; some LH G sizes are also in stock. Tap drill for G 1/2 is 19.0 mm.
Yes, both are stocked. Rc 3/4 (14 TPI, 55°) tap drill 23.5 mm; 3/4-14 NPT (60°) tap drill 23.2 mm. Because the flank angles differ, use the correct tap for the fitting standard – a BSPT fitting in an NPT hole will leak.
Yes, both trapezoidal sizes are stock items. Tap drill for Tr 20x4 is 16.3 mm and for Tr 30x6 is 24.4 mm. Multi-start versions (e.g. Tr 30x12 P6, two-start) and left-hand versions are produced to order.
Yes. Pg 13.5 (tap drill 19.1 mm) and Pg 21 (tap drill 26.8 mm) are the most common conduit sizes and are stocked as taps and dies, together with Pg 7, 9, 11, 16, 29, 36, 42 and 48.
Yes. 0 BA to 10 BA taps and dies are stocked. Tap drills: 2 BA → 4.0 mm, 4 BA → 3.0 mm, 6 BA → 2.3 mm.
Yes. M14x1.25 is a stock item, together with M10x1, M12x1.25 and M18x1.5 – the four common spark plug thread sizes. Thread repair (chasing) taps for these sizes are also available.
Yes – but they are different threads. 1/4-19 is G 1/4 BSPP (55°, pipe thread, major Ø 13.16 mm). 1/4-20 is UNC (60°, fastener thread, major Ø 6.35 mm). Thürmer stocks both; tell us which application you have if you are unsure.
Yes. Extended length taps for deep holes, reduced shank taps, taps without square for collet holding, and taps with DIN 371/376, DIN 352 or ANSI shank dimensions can be produced to order in any thread size.
For ISO metric threads the rule is tap drill diameter = nominal diameter − pitch. M10x1.5 → 8.5 mm, M12x1.75 → 10.2 mm (rounded), M16x2 → 14.0 mm, M20x2.5 → 17.5 mm, M27x1 → 26.0 mm. This gives approx. 75–77 % thread depth, which is the usual compromise between strength and tapping torque. The reference tables further down this page list the standard values.
Use the tables on this page or calculate: tap drill = major diameter − (0.974 / TPI) in inches for ~75 % engagement. Examples: 1/4-20 UNC → 5.1 mm (No.7), 3/8-16 UNC → 8.0 mm (5/16"), 1/2-13 UNC → 10.8 mm (27/64"), 3/4-10 UNC → 16.5 mm, 1/2-20 UNF → 11.5 mm (29/64"), 3/4-16 UNF → 17.5 mm.
G 1/2 → 19.0 mm, G 3/4 → 24.5 mm, G 1 → 30.5 mm. Smaller sizes: G 1/8 → 8.7 mm, G 1/4 → 11.75 mm, G 3/8 → 15.25 mm.
Because NPT is tapered, the drill is chosen for the small end of the thread: 1/8-27 NPT → 8.5 mm (11/32"), 1/4-18 NPT → 11.1 mm (7/16"), 3/8-18 NPT → 14.5 mm (37/64"), 1/2-14 NPT → 18.0 mm, 3/4-14 NPT → 23.2 mm, 1-11.5 NPT → 29.2 mm. Reaming with a taper pipe reamer before tapping gives the best thread and gauge fit.
In hard or tough materials (stainless steel, titanium, Inconel) a slightly larger drill giving 60–65 % thread engagement reduces tapping torque and tap breakage with almost no loss of stripping strength for engagement lengths ≥ 1×D. In soft materials (aluminium, brass, plastics) 75–80 % is normal. For form (fluteless) taps the drill is larger than for cutting taps – typically D − 0.45×P instead of D − P.
Forming taps displace material instead of cutting, so the pre-hole must be larger: roughly tap drill = D − 0.45 × P. M6x1 → 5.5 mm, M8x1.25 → 7.4 mm, M10x1.5 → 9.3 mm, M12x1.75 → 11.2 mm. Use the tap manufacturer's table when available, as the exact value depends on the material's flow behaviour.
Thürmer hand taps (DIN 352) come in sets of taper, second and bottoming (plug) taps. All three are ground to the full thread diameter and differ only in chamfer length – so the taper (starter) tap on its own cuts a complete, in-tolerance thread in a through hole, and the second and bottoming taps are only needed to carry the full thread to the bottom of a blind hole. They are not serial taps (DIN 2181 type, stepped in diameter and marked with rings), where all three must be used in sequence. Machine taps (DIN 371, DIN 376, DIN 374) cut the full thread in one pass and have a chamfer form matched to the hole type: spiral-point (gun nose) for through holes, spiral-flute for blind holes. For special sizes we produce both types.
No. Because every Thürmer hand tap is cut to full thread size, the taper tap alone finishes a through hole. Use the second tap and the bottoming tap only when you need full thread depth close to the bottom of a blind hole, or in tough material where spreading the cut over two or three taps lowers the torque. Single taps from a set (e.g. a bottoming tap only) can be ordered separately, in standard and special sizes.
Spiral point (straight flute, form B) taps push chips forward and are the first choice for through holes. Spiral flute taps (form C, 15° to 45° helix) pull chips back out of the hole and are used for blind holes. Straight-flute taps (form A/D) are used for short-chipping materials such as cast iron and brass, and are the most common form for large diameters and special sizes.
A forming or fluteless tap produces the thread by cold-forming the material without chips. It gives a stronger thread, no chip problems in blind holes and very long tool life, but only works in ductile materials (aluminium, copper alloys, low-carbon and stainless steel up to about 1200 N/mm²) and needs a larger pre-hole and good lubrication. Available in standard sizes from stock and in specials to order.
A thread repair (chasing) tap has a slightly relieved cutting geometry so it cleans and re-forms damaged threads without removing extra material. Typical applications are spark plug threads (M14x1.25), wheel studs (M12x1.5, M14x1.5), hydraulic ports and flange bolts. Thürmer supplies repair taps and thread-restoring dies in standard and special sizes.
A round split die (DIN 223 / DIN EN 22568) is held in a die stock and is used to cut new external threads. A hexagon die nut (DIN 382) is turned with a spanner and is intended for cleaning and repairing existing threads rather than cutting from solid. Both are available in metric, UNC/UNF, BSW/BSF, BSP and BSPT, and in special sizes on request.
Yes. Round dies for special sizes are normally supplied split (adjustable) so the thread diameter can be fine-tuned with the die stock screw. Closed (solid) dies are made where a fixed size is required. Die outside diameters follow DIN EN 22568: 20, 25, 30, 38, 45, 55, 65, 90 and 120 mm.
A nut tap (DIN 357) has a very long shank and a long chamfer, designed for tapping nuts in series on a nut-tapping machine; finished nuts slide onto the shank. Thürmer supplies nut taps in standard and special sizes and pitches.
Yes. For large diameters, hard materials, thin-walled parts or where a broken tap would scrap an expensive workpiece, thread milling on a CNC machine is often better than tapping. One thread mill cuts several diameters of the same pitch, which makes it economical for special sizes as well.
DIN 371 is a machine tap with a reinforced shank (shank thicker than the thread) for M1 to M10. DIN 376 has a reduced shank (shank thinner than the thread) for M3 to M68 coarse thread. DIN 374 is the same as DIN 376 but for metric fine thread. The shank dimensions determine which collet or tap holder you need.
The tolerance class describes the size of the internal thread the tap will produce. ISO 6H is the standard class for general use. 6G produces a slightly larger thread and is used before hot-dip galvanising or plating of the mating bolt, or when the material springs back. 6HX is a wider tolerance intended for cast iron, hardened steel and abrasive materials so the tap stays in tolerance longer. 4H and 5H are tighter (precision) classes; 7H and 7G are wider. Special taps can be ground to any class you specify.
2B is the standard internal thread tolerance for unified threads and 3B is the tighter precision class used in aerospace and defence. A tap marked H3 or H4 (US limit numbering) produces class 2B; H2/H3 produce 3B in most sizes. If your drawing calls for 3B, tell us so we grind the tap to the correct limit.
Yes. Taps oversized by 0.05 to 0.15 mm on the pitch diameter are used when the thread will be plated, coated or anodised afterwards; undersize taps are used when a tight fit is required. State the required plating thickness or the final tolerance and we calculate the tap limit.
Yes. GO/NO-GO plug gauges and ring gauges are produced to order for any thread size, standard or special, in the tolerance class of your drawing, with a measurement certificate on request. Ordering the tap and the gauge together ensures they match.
Yes. Standard taps and dies follow DIN 352, 371, 374, 376, 5156, 5157 and DIN EN 22568 as applicable, with thread form to ISO 68/ISO 965, ASME B1.1, ISO 228, ISO 7, ASME B1.20.1 or DIN 103. Special tools are made to the same standards unless your drawing specifies otherwise.
HSS (high-speed steel, e.g. M2 / 1.3343) is the standard material for general-purpose taps and dies in mild steel, aluminium and brass. HSS-E (also written HSSE or HSS-Co, e.g. M35 / 1.3243 with 5 % cobalt) has higher hot hardness and wear resistance and is the choice for stainless steel, alloy steel, titanium and high-volume machine tapping. Special taps from Thürmer are made in HSS-E by default; HSS is available on request for lower cost.
TiN (gold) is the universal coating for steel and general use. TiCN (blue-grey) is harder and suits cast iron, high-strength steel and abrasive materials. TiAlN (violet-grey) withstands the highest temperatures and is used for stainless steel, titanium and dry or high-speed tapping. Bright (uncoated) or steam-tempered (black) finishes are preferred for aluminium and non-ferrous metals where coated flanks would cause built-up edge. All coatings can be applied to special taps.
For hardened steel above about 45 HRC, hard cast iron and highly abrasive materials, solid carbide taps or thread mills are the right tools. Thürmer can supply carbide taps in standard and selected special sizes on request, but for most special sizes and small quantities HSS-E with TiAlN coating is the more economical choice.
For stainless steel use an HSS-E (cobalt) tap, preferably with TiAlN or TiCN coating, a spiral-flute form for blind holes or spiral-point for through holes, a slightly larger tap drill (60–65 % engagement) and a chlorine-free tapping oil. For special sizes in stainless we recommend the same specification.
Use a bright or steam-tempered HSS tap with polished flutes and a high rake angle; for high volumes a forming tap gives excellent results in wrought aluminium. Avoid TiN coating in soft aluminium. Cutting oil or emulsion prevents built-up edge.
Tower and foundation flange connections use large metric coarse threads, typically M36, M42, M48, M56, M64 and M72 in 10.9 HV bolting; some foundations go up to M80–M90. Blade root inserts and pitch bearings are commonly M30–M42, and turbines of American design use 8 UN threads such as 1.1/4-8 UN, 1.1/2-8 UN and 2-8 UN. Thürmer stocks metric taps up to M64 and produces M68–M100 and 8 UN taps to order, plus thread repair taps and GO/NO-GO gauges for these sizes.
Yes. Thread repair (chasing) taps and thread-restoring dies clean corroded or damaged large threads without cutting them oversize, so the original bolt still fits. For blind-hole inserts in blade roots and bearings we supply the matching tap, tap drill and gauge as a kit. Extra-long taps and taps with a hexagon drive for use with a ratchet or torque tool can be made for access-restricted positions.
Instrument tubing and hydraulic fittings use NPT and NPTF (1/8 to 2 inch), G/BSPP ports with bonded seals (G 1/4 to G 2), and UN/UNF ports for SAE O-ring boss and ORFS fittings (e.g. 7/16-20, 9/16-18, 3/4-16, 1.1/16-12, 1.5/16-12 UN). Flange and wellhead bolting uses 8 UN and metric coarse. All of these are stock or standard-special taps and dies at Thürmer. API line-pipe and buttress thread tools can be quoted on request.
HSS-E (cobalt) with TiAlN coating, spiral-flute for blind holes and spiral-point for through holes, tap drill at 60–65 % thread engagement, and a cutting speed of 3–8 m/min with a chlorine-free tapping oil. Duplex and super duplex work-harden quickly, so avoid dwelling and use a fresh, sharp tap for the final passes. For very hard or large-diameter duplex threads we recommend thread milling instead of tapping.
NPT taper threads are inspected with L1 plug and ring gauges (ASME B1.20.1), which check the hand-tight engagement, not GO/NO-GO like straight threads. Thürmer supplies L1 gauges for NPT and NPTF and taper plug gauges for Rc/BSPT to order. Pre-reaming the hole with a taper reamer before tapping is the most reliable way to get an in-tolerance NPT thread.
Defence equipment mixes metric and inch systems: UNC/UNF and UNJ/MJ threads on US and NATO-standard components, class 3B tolerances for aerospace and weapons parts, left-hand threads on muzzle devices and optics, and BSF/BSW on older British-pattern equipment. Thürmer stocks UNC/UNF/UNEF and metric taps and dies and produces UNJ (SAE AS8879), MJ (ISO 5855), 3B-class and left-hand taps and gauges to order. Certificates of conformity can be supplied with special tools on request.
Yes. Typical maintenance needs are thread repair taps and die nuts for wheel studs, suspension and armour bolting (M12x1.5 to M30 and 1/2-20 UNF to 1.1/8-12 UNF), spark plug and injector threads, and hand tap and die sets in cases for field workshops. Sets can be configured to a unit's own vehicle fleet and supplied in metric, unified or mixed.
Hull, engine and deck machinery use large metric coarse threads M42–M100 and fine threads such as M64x4 and M80x4; steering gear, hatch covers and stern tube components use trapezoidal Tr 40x7 to Tr 100x12; engine-room piping uses G/Rp/Rc pipe threads and NPT on American-built or classed vessels; electrical installations use Pg and metric cable-gland threads. Older and British-built ships still have BSW and BSF fasteners. Thürmer supplies all of these from stock or to order, including left-hand versions for propeller and shaft nuts.
Yes. Hand tap sets, die nuts, thread repair taps and thread files in a case are the standard onboard kit for engine rooms and marine service teams. We assemble sets in metric, UNC/UNF, BSP or BSW/BSF, or mixed, so a crew can repair any thread on board. Sets are also configured for wind-farm service vessels and offshore maintenance contractors.
Cylinder head and main bearing studs on medium-speed engines are typically M30–M64 coarse or fine; injector and sensor ports use metric fine (M14x1.25, M16x1.5, M18x1.5, M24x2) or UNF; cooling-water and lube-oil connections use G/Rp pipe threads. Thread repair taps and chasers in these sizes clean stud holes without removing material, and Helicoil-type insert taps are available for restoring stripped holes.
Yes. STI (screw thread insert) taps cut the oversize thread needed for wire inserts, e.g. M6 insert tap with 6.3 mm tap drill, M8 with 8.4 mm, M10 with 10.5 mm, M12 with 12.5 mm. Guide values from the Thürmer thread table: steel up to 500 N/mm² 12–16 m/min, steel 500–700 N/mm² 6–10 m/min, steel over 700 N/mm² 3–5 m/min, austenitic stainless steel 4–8 m/min, free-cutting stainless 10–15 m/min, grey cast iron 10–15 m/min, long-chipping aluminium 25–45 m/min, brass 15–25 m/min, copper 12–25 m/min, thermoplastics 20–30 m/min. RPM = (cutting speed × 1000) / (π × tap diameter). Reduce speed for large diameters, deep holes and hand-held tapping.
